History
Imagine spending months and months at sea, tired, in search of solid ground, and then spotting a promotory of land and relishing the thought of fresh game and vegtables when you land.......but you can't. It's a stormy March 7th, 1778, and your British Captain, James Cook, can barely manage to keep the ship upright, let alone land on this rocky cliff you've discovered. Instead of fresh food and solid North American ground, you now name this piece of land "Cape Foulweather", and continue up the coastline steadfastly trying to dodge the foul weather and avoid the intimidating rocky shores you see to the north and south.
The Lookout Gift Shop has a large oil painting of Captain Cooks ship "The Resolution" adorning it's fireplace, a reminder of the rough conditions the Captain and his crew faced as they discovered North America. Built in 1937, The Lookout has been a tourist and local destination view-point for thousands of worldwide visitors a year. Sign our guest book in the shop, or find a treasure to remind you of your trip to the spot where "The History of Oregon began."
